SYDNEY – The state visit by President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) to Australia is very welcomed by the Indonesian people in Australia. According to the plan, Jokowi and his entourage will land on Sydney on Saturday morning (25/2/2017).
The contributor of TIMES Indonesia in Sydney, reported, the enthusiasm was proven by the reception from Indonesian people joined in Indonesian Community Centre (ICC) in New South Wales (NSW) area.
“The arrival of President Jokowi has been waited since the delay in November last year. The society and students from various provinces in Indonesia with various traditional clothes are ready to welcome him. In the face-to-face event with Indonesian people on Sunday, we hope that we could discuss with him about the things that need to be noticed for the sake of Indonesian people in Australia,” said the President of ICC, Endi Dharma.
According to the plan, Jokowi would be in Australia for two days (26-27/2). The President would meet Indonesian people at International Convention Centre Sydney. The building with the capacity of 9,000 people was officially announced on the last December. The meeting will be held tomorrow, Sunday (27/2) at 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. local time.
Endi explained, Diaspora Indonesia in Australia which consisted almost 90,000 people were various, ranging from students to professionals.
Around 40% of them live around NSW, including Sydney. They need to be taught about Indonesia, especially the second generation, which is the children born in Australia. Few of them can speak Indonesian and know about Indonesia and its culture.
“The first generation is fine because they were born in Indonesia. There are so many community organizations, such as ICC, which consists of 40 organizations. What we need here is the relationship bonding and facilities. We need House of Indonesia so that we won’t lose that generation. If I am not mistaken, in this visit, Pak Jokowi will officially announce the Indonesian Language Center in Canberra, Perth and Melbourne. We hope that there will be Indonesian cultural home in Sydney,” said the man from Majalengka, West Java.
House of Indonesia, said Endi, actually was not a new idea. It had been discussed by the predecessors with the Consulate General of the Republic of Indonesia (KJRI), Sydney, even it had been a blueprint, which means that it had been planned and discussed by the Indonesian government. But the idea of making a culture center has not been realized yet.
“There are people from around the world in Australia. Most of them have their own cultural centers. Of course, we hope that Indonesian government also pays attention to it. Imagine that in one family, the parents are communicating in Indonesian, but the children born here cannot and do not want to speak Indonesian. Besides the dominant influence of the school and the environment, they also do not have the place to learn about the culture. So, House of Indonesia is one of the solutions. Later, we will discuss with the experts about the detailed concepts,” explained this man who was married to the Vietnamese woman.
In this state visit, Jokowi will be officially welcomed by the General Governor of Sydney. Accompanied by some ministries, the entourage will meet the Prime Minister, Malcolm Turnbull.
The Indonesian and Australian governments will discuss the cyber security partnership, terrorist problems, tourism, and economic cooperation. Besides, there will be a negotiation related to IACEPA or Indonesia Australia Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement.
IACEPA is a bilateral cooperation between the two countries that had been officially announced in 2010 in export-import and investment affairs. One of the investment cooperation is gold mining investment by Australia Newcrest Company. (*)
