JAKARTA Mount Semeru is the highest mountain in Java Island. It has an amazing exoticism. That's why many people especially mount hikers locally even internationally would like to feel its natural beauty over times.

However, this mountain also saves various mysteries. The myths that increasingly make the Mount as high as 3,676 meters above sea level appear more 'exotic' among climbers.

The myth itself arises from the local people from generation to generation, what are the myths? TIMES Indonesia (timesindonesia.co.id) writes it as follows.

1. Ranu Kumbolo lake
Ranu Kumbolo is one of the lakes located at the foot of Mount Semeru. The mount hikers need to do much effort and exhausting ascent in reaching the location. Even though it is including an exotic lake for everyone, it is said that the lake water is often used to process religious rituals. So, the mount hikers are forbidden to bathe, wash and even set up a tent at least with a distance of 10 meters from the lake.

2. The goldfish of Ranu Kumbolo guard
It is said that there is a goldfish which is the reincarnation of the Goddess called as the guard of Ranu Kumbolo. The myth increasingly makes climbers and residents around follow the unwritten rules not to do bathing, washing and so on in Ranu Kumbolo.

3. Mbah Dipo
Mbah Dipo is one of the guards (kuncen) of Mount Semeru that has passed away. Mbah Dipo is still in memory of the surrounding community. One of Mbah Dipo's messages to surrounding residents was if Mount Semeru erupted, residents should have to go forward to river and they are prohibited from going to Mount Sawur.

4. Tanjakan cinta (Love Hill)The actual of Love Hill isn't too steep, it's just quite long. So that it can make climbers feel exhausted. It is believed that if you are walking this route without rest and not looking back, so your love will be granted.

5. Mount Semeru is the Java Island’s nails
Semeru Mountain is the highest mountain on Java Island with a summit called Mahameru. It is believed that Mount Semeru was brought by the Gods to become nails and provide a balance for the island of Java which was once oscillated in the ocean.

The various myths of Mount Semeru above in fact don't dampen the mount climbers to enjoy the attractiveness of this mountain and to reach the summit. (*)
