Up and Close with Pencak Silat Kuda Putih, Bondowoso's Unique Local Martial Art

TIMESINDONESIA, BONDOWOSO – Pencak Silat or local martial art has become a culture in Indonesia. There are lots of style in performing this martial art. One of them is the Pencak Silat Kuda Putih Bondowoso East Java.

The Kuda Putih martial art school is originally came from Cermee. Kuda Putih means white horse which symbolized a strong horse, and white as a symbol of purity.

The white horse martial art has around 12 stances. They will usually use fire, sickle, and knife as their weaponry.

The Kuda Putih was founded by Raden Suto. Then after he died, the school was taken by Atrawi. From here, after Atrawi died, the martial arts activity become vacuum and almost vanished.

Yandi as someone who care to the existence of this traditional martial art bring it back and built a school to teach the young ancestor in order to preserve and maintain the existence of the Kuda Putih style.

According to Mr. Enik there had been a performance by the students of Jember University in order to introduce this martial art to the society.

"They performed wonderfully. And then at the end of the show, The Kuda Putih school present Singo Ulung as the closing ceremony," he said.

Meanwhile, the local government has also try to introduce this traditional martial art by inviting them on opening ceremony to show their skills. This event was a manifest of Realisasi Program Kerja Agro-Ekowisata at Desa Ramban Wetan.

The Pencak Silat Kuda Putih is considered as Indonesian cultural heritage. And surely not only Bondowoso local government to who need to preserve it, but it's also our job as a good Indonesian citizen. (*)
