TIMESINDONESIA, SUMBA TIMURSumba, Nusa Tenggara Timur (NTT) an incredibly unique context to be examined at its megalith building and its larger society. The stone pulling ceremony or Tarik Batu is one of the example of unique contect that they has.

To the Sumba, the megalithic stone they pulled will be used as the megalithic tomb. By pulling the stone it symbolize their closeness to the spirit of the deceased family.

“in our belief, the spirit of the deceased family are around and protecting the family from any disaster that might happen," Umbu Ndapa, a culture bearer at Sumba said.

Still according to him, the stone pulling ceremony in ancient time was attended by hundreds of even thousands people together. But nowadays, they tend to choose the pull the stone by using big trucks and excavators.

“Eventhough now it's using a bit modern way, the stone pulling ceremony or Tarik Batu in Sumba will be kept as a sacred ceremony, the stone will still be given to the loved one as a symbol of their respect and love," he added. (*)
