JAKARTA As most of Indonesian are moslems, there then we will find lots of Mosque anywhere from the traditional to the modern one. Masjid Tuo Kayu Jao Solok is a living prove how old is Islam been in Indonesia.

Located at Jalan Kabupaten Solok-Solok Selatan or Jorong Kayu Jao, Nagari Batang Barus, Gunung Talang, Solok, West Sumatera this Mosque was built on 1599.

"The roof of the mosque was made from dark palm fiber with three layers. Palm fiber was a typical material used to built The Rumah Gadang or the traditional house of West Sumatera," Mustamik the Mosque manager said.

The roof was supported by 27 solid wood with its local wisdoms. The bedug or drum is still the genuine one since the it was firstly made and still be used till now to precede the adhan as the sign or calling for prayer.

Masjid Tuo Kayu Jao Solok has 24 milestone which symbolize the 24 elders at that time. It also has 13 doors which symbolize the amount of the ritual in Salah. And 5 stepping ladder which symbolize the five pillars of Islam. Interesting isn't it?
