JAKARTA – Exfoliation is the removal of the oldest dead skin cells on the surface of the skin. Exfoliation is usually involved in facial treatment. However, there are several dangers of over-exfoliating.
One of the most common exfoliation method is scrubbing. Not only does it remove dead skin cells and cleanse clogged pores, scrubbing also lets the skin breathe and absorb the nutrition from the skincare applied on the next step.
How often should we exfoliate?
A dermatologist, Dr, Nana Novia Jayadi, Sp. KK, said that scrubbing should not be done daily as it could lead to skin damage.
“Exfoliating is done to remove the dead skin cells on the skin surface in order to make it brighter. However, over-exfoliating could damage the skin barrier which could result in dry skin, irritation, redness, and breakout,” said Dr. Nana.
Besides, over-exfoliating could lead to premature aging and wrinkle as the skin becomes dry.
It is better to wash your face twice a day with facial foam instead of scrubbing or exfoliating every day.
Choose facial wash with less foam, as foams tend to contain detergent that may cause dry skin. (*)
