TIMESINDONESIA, JOMBANG – Nowadays, people rather to buy a cozy fluffy rug to decor their house as comfortable as possible. But how about at then? When people just has regular (away from fancy) tile? Yes, people especially Indonesian use the pandanus mat a.k.a tikar pandan, and an old lady of Jombang still maintain the production till now.

To be able to work and feed her self is an honor to her, that's may be the best word to describe this old lady. Sarinem, a 65 years old lady keep maintaining to produce the traditional pandanus mat herself. She has run the business for more than 30 years of her life.

The Pandanus mat has to had a long process of preparation before distributed includes scraping and boiling the leaves, and drying. Then the dried leaves will be weaved in certain pattern and then distributed to the customers.

Sarinem and several other old lady distributed their products at the Pasar Legi, Jombang, East Java. You could have each of the mat for IDR 30 K to IDR 75 K depends on the size. Quite affordable regarding to the long process taken.

"The market has been down, people rather to choose modern mat to decorate their house, I could only sell one or two mat in a day," Sarinem said while moving her finger to weave the mat.

In addition, this lady who has had 7 grandchildren said that he could only weave one mat in a day. "Pandanus mat (tikar pandan) is not that complicated you only need some patient in weaving it," the lady of Jombang said.(*)
