TIMESINDONESIA, JAKARTA – Drinking coffee has become a part of the urban lifestyle. In the middle of a dense work schedule, coffee considered a life-saver because it prevents drowsiness. Besides, some people also say that drinking coffee can help ease off constipation. Is it true?

63 participants stated that coffee is a drink efficient to help stimulate the urge to defecate. Coffee was proven to increase intestine movements, especially the rectosigmoid part at least 30 minutes after consumption. This result shows that coffee stimulates a motoric response from the distal part of the intestine for most of the people.
However, it still remains to be seen how caffeine could help ease off constipation. This is because several other studies also show that decaffeinated coffee can also stimulate intestine movement on some people.
For some people, coffee can directly help ease off constipation. But, according to the International Foundation for Functional Gastrointestinal Disorders (IFFGD), excessive consumption of drinks with caffeine content increases defecation frequency and can even make the feces consistency turns mushy or liquid-like.
According to several studies results above, can be concluded that coffee helps ease off constipation on most people. However, it could not cure or resolve severe constipation.
Instead of drinking coffee, there are other better ways to take care of constipation. Daily consumption of a healthy diet such as fruits with a high content of fiber is good to keep your digestion system in a good shape, thus prevents constipation. (*)
