TIMESINDONESIA, JAKARTARed bean soup or in Indonesia well known by es kacang merah is one popular dessert that you can easily found in Manado, Palembang, Bangka, and certain other area in the country.

This dessert tastes sweet and savory since beside it's made of red bean itself it's made of palm sugar and added with coconut milk. The local community will added some shaved ice block.

As the time goes, the local community will add more topping before it served. They usually add it with jackfruit, bread, fermented cassava, or avocado.

As any other bean soup, you need to be a little patient in cooking this red bean soup since it takes time. To save your time you could use pressure cooker and let it there till the texture becomes mushy.

Once it's ready, you could add some palm sugar or sugar block if you like. Put pandan leaves and simmer it in a medium heat for about 15 minutes.

While waiting for the red bean done you could cook the coconut milk in another pot. You need to stir it occasionally and cook it with a low heat so it won't blow up once it boil.

After all is done, you could serve red bean soup for your dessert by adding some shaved ice block. You could also add some additional topping you like. All of the ingredients could be purchased at the nearest Asian or Indonesian store around your house. (*)
