People of East Sumba Turned Palm Tree Leaves into Wonderful Craft

TIMESINDONESIA, SUMBA TIMUR – Marince, a local weaver of East Sumba, East Nusa Tenggara keep doing her job and even raise her crafts production of woven palm tree leaves though the pandemic struck the country.
“I have been doing this business for over than 2 years. And I will keep doing the business even during this pandemic to support my family,” Marince Ratu said on Monday (11/5/2020).

Marince, is a widow with 5 children. For the last few years she has been supporting her family needs by weaving those palm tree leaves. Usually, she will make several craft such as hat, plate, container, or broom stick.
She got the skill from her parents. Her parents taught her basic skill she needs. She really started her business from the very bottom. "I'm so glad that I could take some advantages from the nature through this palm tree leaves," she said.
Marince also hope that the government will give more attention to the local entrepreneur in East Sumba, East Nusa Tenggara especially palm tree leaves weaver. "I need a fund support for my business. I'm thinking to create a permanent shop fro my crafts," Marince added. (*)
