
TIMESINDONESIA, JAKARTA – Gambang Bread is the most delicious bread ever, according to CNN. Gambang bread placed at the same level as baguette from France, ciabatta from Italy, and Karavai from Russia.
Gambang bread is from Betawi. The main ingredients for this bread are flour and melted brown sugar. It has a distinctly strong aroma of cinnamon. Although it is from Betawi, it was originally introduced by the Dutch. During the colonial era in Indonesia, many Dutch people in Indonesia were not used to eat rice, thus they used brown sugar and cinnamon which was overflowing in Indonesia as the main ingredients to make this bread.

It has a rectangular shape, similar to the gambang musical instrument. A culture expert from Betawi, Yahya Adi Saputra mentioned that in the colonial era, the Dutch established a bakery in Batavia which was particularly produced this bread with a similar shape with gambang musical instrument.
They were inspired by the shape of Gambang Kromong musical instrument. “The Dutch bakery in Batavia chose the distinguished shape of gambang kromong musical instrument,” said Yahya as quoted by Kompas.
While in Jakarta this bread is known as Gambang Bread, in Semarang it is known as the train rail prop bread. (*)
