TIMESINDONESIA, SRAGEN – Bonsai, the Japanese art of growing miniature trees, is a process that produces exceptional and one-of-a-kind botanical specimens that evoke images of ancient forests. Someppeople would consider this art as a hobby, some even make it both as hobby and business like what Kampung Bonsai (Bonsai Village) ogf Sambungmacan village, Sragen Regency, Central Java does.

Well, almost all the local community in this village make Bonsai as their hobby. But then, as some people passes by, they adore their work of art and trying to buy it. There then the local community make it as a business. “Most of the local community make it as their business, they even have had their own Bonsai community,” The Chief of Sambungmacan Vilage Bondan Pratiwi said.

Still according to him, the Bonsai they made has a good quality with a good price. They even had an annual Bonsai exhibition they held at the local place. Before the pandemic struck the country, they even had planned to hold an exhibition on September. Yet, they have to put all the plan down.

There are around 50 villagers work as Bonsai farmer. Some of them even has started it since 1980. Most of the local community will find some tree in the local forest to be treated as Bonsai for the best quality.

Sudarsono, one of the local communities who made Bonsai as his business made his yard as Bonsai farm. He learned the art by reading a book. He creates Bonsai out of Banyan, Tamarind, and Streblus asper tree. “It’s kind of advantages for the people nowadays to learn how to Bonsai a tree from YouTube,” Sudarsono said.

This guy of Sambungmacan village, Sragen, Central Java also graft his Bonsai with another fruit tree such as guava, soursop, coconut and else. He charges all his customers depend on the Bonsai, usually the older the Bonsai the higher the price. (*)
