TIMESINDONESIA, JAKARTA – When summer comes and the wind blows hard followed by an empty farm after harvesting season done like what happens now in Nganjuk, East Java. You will find lots of people from little kids to the elder fly their gambreng kites to the sky.

Gambreng kite is one common kite you could find easily almost on every corner of the country. In Jegreg, Lengkong, Nganjuk, East Java it has been a tradition to fly a kite after harvesting season over.

The farms that usually used by the farmer will look like a empty field for them where they could fly their kites without an obstacle. They will do this activities in the late afternoon where the sun has not given its best heat.

The gambreng kites is an ordinary kite made of junk the local community found around their house. They usually used paper sack or some paper bag for the body. Bamboo is also used to make a good gambreng.

Gambreng has two part of body. When it's done it will look like a lady bug with a bow on top of it. Yes, the local will add a bow that could produce a sweet and beautiful sound. For some people that unaccustomed with the sound will think that it's annoying, but for some people it will be their lullaby.

"I made it my self. It's so simple. The sound will be little squeaky, that's why it's called gambreng (squeaky) kite," Sandi, a gambreng kites lover of Nganjuk, East Java said on Sunday (30/8/2020).
