Gula Cakar, a Cute Pinky Sweetener for Your Coffee or Tea

TIMESINDONESIA, JAKARTA – You might feel a little bit surprised once you see Gula Cakar. Yes, this sweetener just a bit distinctive compared to another sweetener in this world. It spongy texture and cute color make this sweetener highlighted amongst others.
Gula which means sugar and cakar which literally means scratch briefly explained the look of this sweetener. This sweetener made of sugar added with baking soda and food colouring. Once it’s added into your coffee or tea it will melt jut in seconds.

You might be having a little trouble to find this exotic sweetener in the market for there are no much people producing this kind sugar.
"It was so popular amongst the kids. They loved it and took it as their candy. However as there are lots of new kind of candy and snacks, people has started to forget about this snack," Ijoh, one of Gula Cakar vendor at Majalengka said on Saturday (24/10/2020).
This sweetener has been used by the local community in Majalengka, West Java for decades. However, there hasn’t been a brief explanation about the exact time of when Gula Cakar was invented and who or where it first came from. (*)
