5 Iconic Historical Places in Palembang You Need to Visit

TIMESINDONESIA, PALEMBANG – Located at the lowest part of Sumatra Island, Palembang has dozens of historical places that worth the visit. These places set side to side from each other, so you will be able to visit some of these places by feet by hopping around next to another. So, which attraction are they? Let's check them out.
1. Ampera Bridge

The locals known this places Jembatan Ampera. This bridge was built in 1962 with 1,117 meter long and 22 m wide. At that time, this bridge was the biggest bridge and the most outstanding bridge in the country. Back then, the bridge could be lifted up whenever there was a huge ship passing by under it.
2. Museum Monumen Ampera (Monpera)

This museum holds the history of Dutch Military Aggression II back then. in this museum you will find lots diorama of Palembang back then as well the condition at that moment. For now, the government has added a nice dancing fountain to pamper the visitor more.
3. Internasional Plaza (IP)

The International Plaza is the first mall ever built in Palembang. This department store was built in 1992. and as for now, this mall was considered as the oldest mall that witness the development progress on modern Palembang. Aside of the old construction, the shopping center still become a favorite place for the local to do their shopping.
4. Benteng Kuto Besak (BKB)

Benteng Kuto Besak or the Big City Fortress might be the oldest building of all. The idea of building this fortress was found by Sultan Mahmud Badaruddin which rule the city in 1724-1758 but the construction was started and finished by Sultan Muhammad Bahauddin which rule the city in 1776-1803.
The fortress covered the mighty palace of Palembang with 274,32 meter long, 182,88 wide and 9,14 meter tall. As for now, Benteng Kuto Besak was used for military base camp. While visiting this place you could also walk or do some jogging at Sekanak River located right next to it.
5. Pasar 16 Ilir

Located at Jalan Pasar 16 Ilir, Palembang right on Musi River bank, this floating market will give you a nice experience o shopping your grocery. This market has become a favorite place for the locals to do their grocery as well sight seeing. It opens daily from 07.00-16.00 local western times. (*)
