TIMESINDONESIA, JAKARTA – Researchers recently found a rainbow-colored fish in Maldives. This fish is found gently swimming around the reefs 40 to 70 meters beneath the ocean surface. Researchers then named this fish as Rose Veiled Fairy Wrasse.
This fish has the scientific name Cirrhilabrus finifenmaa. Previously this fish was found in 1990 and mistakenly identified as Cirrhilabrus rubrisquamis or the red velvet fairy wrasse.

This was because these fish were found as juveniles, and by the time they have grown they change color. The juveniles will look the same as the wrasse species. However when they reach adulthood the color will distinguish their characteristics from others.
"This exemplifies why describing new species, and taxonomy in general, is important for the conservation and management of biodiversity," said Yi Kai Tea as written in CNN.
Finifenmaa itself means rose. This name is taken from the color of the adult male Rose Veiled Fairy Wrasse fish. The color will be as red and beautiful as roses with blue gradations from half of it body back to the tail.
Researchers published these findings in a journal that they uploaded on Zookeys, Tuesday (8/3/2022). They focused their research on the changes of color and size of adult and juvenile male wrasse. They even also counted the number of their scales.
Until now, researchers from the California Academy of Sciences and the Maldives Marine Research Institute are still doing their research. Beside Rose Veiled Fairy Wrasse, they have also found 8 other new types of fish found in area just for this month. (*)
