JAKARTA The Swiss Open 2022 showed us some worthy matches that could get all badminton fans all around the world to the edge of their seats. Combinations of team play, strategy, skill, accuracy, and dexterity were performed by the young, yet talented athletes on the court during this prestigious event.

If there is another thing to learn besides the basic knowledge of the game, it is about how to choose a perfect strategy to counter your opponents, which Jonathan Christie, the champion from Indonesia just did. Before his match against Prannoy H. S., Jonathan watched and learned Prannoy’s playstyle which was successfully performed to deny another Indonesian athlete, Anthony Sinisuka Ginting off the next stage of the championship. Already knowing his opponent’s playstyle, Jonathan concocted his own recipe for victory which successfully helped him achieve victory in the Swiss Open 2022 in Basel, Sunday (27/3/2022).

According to Jonathan, he aimed to put the shuttlecock as far away as possible; out of reach of the Indian athlete, Prannoy.

“The strategy is quite similar to the one I used to play against Srikanth, by aiming as far away as possible from the opponent’s reach and starting to engage only when opportunity allows. I also took a lesson from Ginting’s game in which he relentlessly attacked his opponent. Although sounds like a fool-proof strategy, Prannoy could use it to make an advantage for himself,” said Jonathan via written information of PP PBSI, Monday (28/3/2022).

Previously, Indonesia also had encountered India in men’s singles and compete against another representative of both countries in the semifinal.

Jonathan passed through to the final stage after the encounter against Kidambi Srikanth, while Prannoy had his way after his match against Ginting.

Jonathan’s victory was delayed after losing two crucial points. Both sides fought fiercely to claim the title, but eventually Jonathan managed to get an upper hand and emerged victoriously.

“I tried to end the game quickly and continuously delivered streaks of attacks. But it proved my strategy that Prannoy can make an advantage for himself with such strategy which scored him two crucial points. I went back to my counter-play strategy and successfully delivered a surprise attack which Prannoy was not ready for,” said Jonathan as quoted from Antara, Monday (28/3/2022).

As the fourth superior, the title of champion in Basel feels special for Jonathan, especially after he tested positive for Covid-19 a few moments ago. He hoped that his title from BWF Super 300 Tournament can be a useful stepping stone to achieving other titles in the upcoming events this year.

“This result is very important to me, not only the title but also the whole process. The fact that I can compete in the All England and this tournament after I got tested positive for Covid-19 in Germany is a grace from God. Especially that I can win after more than two years without any medals,” he said.

Jonathan still desires to achieve other titles in the higher levels. He hopes that his win in Switzerland leads to other great achievements in 2022.

“Hopefully I can perform consistently like this, maximum while can still enjoy the match,” he said.

Besides Jonathan Christie, Indonesia also achieved another title in the Swiss Open 2022 in men’s doubles of Fajar Alfian and Muhammad Rian Ardianto. Fajar and Rian brought home the champion title after the match against the team from Malaysia, Goh Sze Fei and Nur Izzudin. (*)
