Njara, the Way Local Community of Sumba Raised Their Horses

TIMESINDONESIA, WAINGAPU – The local community of Sumba has their own way of getting their horses from nature. This way is so called Njara. Njara is a local way to say wrangling a wild horse in the savannah.
Horse has become a common personal transportation in Sumba. They use this cattle to help them doing their daily activities such as carrying their goods to the nearest market.

What makes it more interesting is the way the local community catch the horse in the wild. Back then, they wrangle the horse in the wild and then tame it and make it as their cattle.
As for now, there has been less horses find in the wild. Most of them are breed in the pen. However, the essence of old tradition has been kept till now. The horses still becoming the first alternative to carry them around the area.
Yudi T.T. Rawambaku, S.E, Par, a local member of tourism awareness community of Sumba said that the horse was particularly brought by Mongolian army when they happened to invade the area.
Back then, horse was merely owned by those royal family. And there was none of common has this cattle except for those with money because the price was so high.
"These Mongolian horse adapted with the local environment and made some change in their body shape and size to survive in Sumba," Yudi said on Thursday (1/9/2022).
Yudi also said that each year the local community of Sumba hold a local horse festival. The festival involve 1000 horses to be paraded around the area. (*)
