First Batch Departs, Minister: Pilgrims' Health should be the Main Consideration

JAKARTA The first batch of Indonesian pilgrims for hajj this season has been departed to Mecca from Soekarno Hatta International Airport. The departure was the start of the operational stages of the pilgrimage in 1444 H/2023 AD . 

While addressing the congregation, Minister of Religious Affairs Yaqut Cholil Qoumas, emphasized the importance of maintaining health for pilgrims. This message was conveyed during the release ceremony of the first group at Jakarta-Pondok Gede Embarkation (JKG 01).

According to Minister Gus Yaqut, the pilgrims departing this year are those who have been chosen to perform the pilgrimage routine as the fifth pillar of Islam. In this place, health is a vital factor that must be considered. 

"Please always maintain your health during the journey until you return to the country. Do not overexert yourself in activities, especially in performing sunnah worship, especially when you feel unwell," the Minister said. 

He also warned pilgrims about conditions in Saudi Arabia that are different from Indonesia, especially regarding the hotter temperatures. Therefore, the government has prepared health workers who are ready to provide services to pilgrims. 

The number of elderly pilgrims has been having some raise in this year. In this context, Minister Yaqut asked the officers to be more friendly and caring to elderly pilgrims, and invited all pilgrims to care for the elderly in their entourage. 

Minister Yaqut also reminded the importance of bringing the necessary items during the Hajj pilgrimage. He advised Indonesian pilgrims to be wise in using social media while in Saudi and focus on worship.

"I hope that all Indonesian hajj pilgrims can perform the hajj pilgrimage well, get ease and smoothness, and return to the country safely," the Minister said. 

The health of the pilgrims has become the main consideration for the government for it will be a crucial part to do all the routine. It is a part of the government's efforts to ensure the implementation of the 2023 hajj pilgrimage so it will runs well and safely. (*)
