TIMESINDONESIA, SUMBA TIMUR – Nestled amidst the sprawling cedar forests, Danau Laipori or Lake Laipori, often referred to as Danau Cemara which litterally  means as Lake Cedar. It is a natural wonder that remains largely undiscovered by tourists. Yet, this pristine lake boasts breathtaking and captivating views that rival some of the world's most picturesque destinations.

The lake is located in the village of Palakahembi, Pandawai District, East Sumba Regency. It's approximately a 20-kilometer drive from Waingapu, the main city of East Sumba.

Visiting this lake feels like stepping into a cool climate region, reminiscent of European or American protected cedar forests. The Cemara forest surrounding Danau Laipori not only offers views illuminated by dappled sunlight filtering through the cedar trees but also houses a crystal-clear lake within its midst.

The transparent waters of the lake and the rustling of the cedar trees create an enchanting atmosphere that keeps visitors captivated. Occasional bird songs break the silence, making visitors feel at one with nature.

"Danau Laipori is incredibly beautiful and mesmerizing, yet it remains relatively untouched by tourists. It's equally as stunning as other lakes on Sumba Island," said Jhoni Alvino, a visitor, on a sunny Sunday (20/8/2023).

According to Alvino, at Danau Laipori, visitors have the freedom to capture photos against various breathtaking backdrops. The lake's entire surroundings make for a picturesque setting, so you don't need to search for the perfect angle.

"As far as the eye can see, hundreds of Cemara and Lontar trees create a mesmerizing sight towards the east. Additionally, in the evenings, you can witness a stunning sunset," he added.

Ambros, a local resident of Palakahembi, admitted that the access road to Danau Laipori from the main road is still unpaved and rocky, which dissuades many tourists from visiting.

"Perhaps visitors are uncomfortable with the rough, unpaved, and rocky road that stretches about 2 kilometers into the lake," he explained.

Ambros expressed hope that the local government would pay more attention to Danau Laipori as a tourist attraction. This, he believes, would not only allow the surrounding community to benefit economically but also contribute to the regional budget.

"I think that's our hope for the regional government, that Danau Laipori can become a destination for tourists and visitors," Ambros concluded.

In conclusion, Danau Laipori is a hidden gem waiting to be discovered by the world. Its pristine natural beauty, serene atmosphere, and unique charm make it a destination worth visiting for those looking to experience the unspoiled wonders of Sumba Timur.(*)
