TIMESINDONESIA, JAKARTA – In the past week, Mount Bromo's savannah has witnessed a mesmerizing natural phenomenon. In fact, amateur videos captured a portion of the savannah covered in frost on Friday morning, (1/9/2023).
Head of Administrative Affairs at the Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park (TNBTS), Septi Eka Wardhani, informed us that this frost phenomenon, also known as "embun upas" or frost dew, occurred in the Bromo Sea of Sand area. According to Septi, this phenomenon can occur repeatedly when the temperature drops significantly.

The occurrence of frost dew is a common event, especially around Mount Bromo during the dry season. Similar events have taken place in previous years and always bring morre tourist attention to Bromo either from those domestic or foreign tourist.
Septi explained that frost dew only occurs in the morning, before the sun fully rises, and it captivates the attention of tourists visiting Mount Bromo. The air temperature during the occurrence of frost dew ranges from 5 to 9 degrees Celsius. "Besides the Bromo Sea of Sand, this frost dew phenomenon can also happen in the Ranupane and Ranu Regulo areas," she said on Saturday, (2/9/2023).
The presence of frost dew, which occurs annually, cannot be predicted as to when it will appear. This phenomenon only happens at specific times and, of course, becomes a unique attraction for tourists who wish to visit.
The Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park is one of the top tourist destinations in East Java. Each year, this area attracts tourists from both within the country and abroad.
Khoirul Umam, a 32-year-old operator of Bromo jeep transport services, confirmed the phenomenon's existence. According to him, the presence of frost dew adds a unique charm for tourists. Since it doesn't occur every day and cannot be predicted, only fortunate tourists have the chance to witness it.
"Because it doesn't happen every day and can't be predicted, not all tourists can experience the frost dew phenomenon at Mount Bromo. It's a matter of luck," Umam stated.
