TIMESINDONESIA, JAKARTA – Under the overcast skies of Jakarta on November 21, 2023, a beacon of hope emerged amidst the grave international concerns about the ongoing crisis in Gaza. The R20 International Summit of Religious Authorities (ISORA), organized by the Nahdlatul Ulama (PBNU), signifies a momentous occasion where global religious leaders gather to turn dialogue into action.

Scheduled to commence on November 27, 2023, this landmark summit, inaugurated by Indonesian President Joko Widodo, symbolizes Indonesia's strong commitment to fostering global peace and understanding.

At a press conference, PBNU's Chairman, KH. Yahya Cholil Staquf, emphasized the urgency and significance of ISORA. "This summit is more than a conference; it is a call to action to influence global dynamics in these challenging times," he articulated with a sense of profound determination.

Known affectionately as Gus Yahya, he expressed hope that the summit will catalyze global actors and religious figures to advocate for a ceasefire in Palestine. "We are at a critical juncture where our actions today will shape humanity's future," he added, highlighting the need for concrete actions from religious leaders worldwide.

The press room atmosphere intensified as Zuhair al-Shun, the Palestinian Ambassador to Indonesia, took the podium. Describing the situation in Gaza as a "new holocaust" and "genocide," his words resonated deeply, painting a stark picture of the dire situation.

The summit promises to be more than a platform for religious leaders to voice their concerns. It aims to devise concrete strategies and actionable steps to address the ongoing struggles faced by people in Palestine and around the world.

Over 150 participants, including 40 international delegates, are expected to attend, underscoring the event's global significance. The theme, "The Role of Religion in Addressing Violence in the Middle East and Threats to the Rule-Based International Order," reflects the summit's broad and impactful agenda.

Featuring key speakers like Rais Aam PBNU KH Miftachul Akhyar, Grand Imam of Al-Azhar Sheikh Ahmad al-Thayyeb, Secretary-General of the Muslim World League (MWL) Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdul Karim al-Issa, and United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Gueterres (pending confirmation), the summit represents a critical intersection of religious thought and international policy.

This event also highlights Indonesia's role as the world's largest Muslim-majority country in advancing peace and tolerance. Hosting ISORA in Jakarta is not a coincidence but a testament to Indonesia's commitment to global humanitarian issues and peace.

Asked about his expectations from the summit, Gus Yahya commented, "We hope that from Jakarta, a joint commitment and concrete actions will emerge, bringing positive change for humanity. We must unite to address these long-standing issues."

As the press conference concluded, the earlier tense atmosphere transformed into one of hope and anticipation. With the summit's end, religious and political leaders will carry a vital message: real action is required to bring peace and halt the humanitarian disaster unfolding.

ISORA in Jakarta is more than just a meeting of religious and political minds; it is a symbol of global unity and commitment to creating a better world. We all, as individuals and part of the global community, have a responsibility to act and contribute positively to peace and humanity.

While ISORA represents a small step in the long journey towards world peace, every small step counts. From Jakarta, the message of peace and hope will continue to resonate, inspiring further actions around the world. (*)
