Bridging Boundaries: PPI Hungary's Participation for the Upcoming Election

TIMESINDONESIA, JAKARTA – In a bid to strengthen democratic engagement within the Indonesian diaspora, the Indonesian Student Association in Hungary (PPI Hungary) played a pivotal role in a recent overseas election awareness event organized by the Overseas Election Committee (PPLN Budapest).
This gathering went beyond just watching a film; it fostered community spirit and emphasized the significance of active participation in the upcoming 2024 General Election.

In a unique cinematic experience on Saturday (23/12/2023), PPI Hungary joined forces with various diaspora organizations in Hungary. Those including the Special Branch Leadership of Muhammadiyah Hungary (PCIM), the Sharia Economic Society of Hungary (MES), and members of the European Association for the Progress of Indonesia (Perinma).
The event was not only a celebration of Indonesian cinema but also a platform for discussing the critical importance of the upcoming 2024 General Election.
"Kejarlah Janji" (Chase the Promise) was the film of choice for the night, providing a backdrop for conversations about the role of elections in shaping Indonesia's future. Dimas Wahab, the Indonesian Ambassador to Hungary, highlighted the event's significance, emphasizing the responsibility of the diaspora in contributing to Indonesia's democratic process.
"Elections play a vital role in Indonesia's transition of leadership for the next five years. It is time for us to participate actively and ensure the success of the elections, even here in Hungary," Wahab remarked.
Agung Wicaksono, Chairman of PPLN Budapest, shared insights into the upcoming election logistics. He disclosed that the Hungarian elections are scheduled for Saturday (10/2/2024), four days ahead of the election day in Indonesia. This strategic timing aims to maximize participation by holding the election on a holiday.
Agung, also a Ph.D. student in Political Science at Corvinus University of Budapest, explained that the election in Hungary would unfold across three Polling Stations (TPS), strategically located to accommodate the dispersed Indonesian community. The venues include BOK Körcsarnok (Puskas Ferenc Stadium Area) in Szeged City and one TPS located at Albert Szent-Györgyi Agora.
The event went beyond a typical movie night, providing a platform for active discussions. Representatives from PPI Hungary engaged in insightful conversations about the upcoming elections, fostering a sense of shared responsibility.
The evening concluded with the screening of "Kejarlah Janji," a movie that resonated with the audience, sparking reflections on the importance of political participation. Attendees, including PPI Hungary's representatives, were not only treated to an enriching cinematic experience but also to a taste of Indonesia through an array of authentic Indonesian dishes.
This event transcended geographical boundaries, uniting the diaspora in Hungary with the shared goal of contributing to the democratic process in Indonesia.
