Felari PPI Dunia Empowers through Media Literacy Coaching Clinic

TIMESINDONESIA, JAKARTA – Felari PPI Dunia, through its Duta Felari Batch 2023/2024 program, recently organized a routine coaching clinic focused on Media Literacy on Friday (19/1/2024). The event, conducted online via Zoom, was attended by Duta Felari representatives from 38 provinces across Indonesia.

The clinic featured Fauzul Azhim, Chairman of NYC Turkiyë and President of PPI Turki for the 2022 term, as the guest speaker. Azhim emphasized the role of media as a communication channel, defining media as a plural form of the Latin word "medium," meaning an intermediary between a message source and receiver.

He elaborated on various forms of media, from mass media to cyber and electronic media. Furthermore, Azhim explained methods to distinguish between hoax and factual news, such as verifying the trustworthiness of the source, tracing back to the origin, and confirming the accuracy of photos and videos.

"Yesterday, there was a viral news about the arrest of a 'babi ngepet' (mythical boar) in Depok. It turned out that the circulated photo on social media was of a sick and malnourished polar bear. This emphasizes the importance of verifying news accuracy before being influenced by the prevalence of hoaxes today," he explained.

Crafting Quality Articles

During the session, Azhim also shared insights into creating good and accurate news. He explained the fundamental principles of a news article, emphasizing the use of S-P-O (Subject-Object-Predicate) and the inclusion of 5W+1H (What, When, Where, Who, Why, How) in the content.

Participants in the coaching clinic showed enthusiasm, actively taking notes on Azhim's insights. They also posed questions regarding ethical writing practices.

"The hope is that through this coaching clinic, participants can sharpen their understanding, especially regarding media literacy amid the proliferation of digital information and the prevalence of misinformation. This way, technological advancements can be utilized to educate the younger generation," added Azhim.
