TIMESINDONESIA, AUSTRIAWapena, or Warga Pengajian Austria, stands as a significant community for Indonesian Muslims in Austria. It fosters unity, religious values, and cultural connections.

Established around 40 years ago, its origins trace back to the Indonesian Embassy in Vienna and Indonesian diaspora members working in the region. Originally known as Warga Pengajian Wina, the organization has grown beyond Vienna, encompassing members from various cities across Austria.

Around 2012, Wapena underwent a pivotal shift, relocating its activities to a rented space at Malfattigasse No. 18. This move reflected the organization's adaptability and commitment to providing a communal space for spiritual and cultural activities.

The year 2022 marked a significant milestone for Wapena as it achieved ownership of its mosque located at Rauscherstrasse 7. This acquisition, made possible through accumulated endowment funds, symbolizes the community's resilience and commitment to sustaining a place for worship and community gatherings.

Representative Structure

Wapena's governance underwent a transformative phase with the introduction of a Consultative Council. This representative body, consisting of 12 members, was established to ensure inclusivity and representation from various segments of the Indonesian Muslim community in Austria.

The six segments include the general community, international organization employees in Vienna and Austrian national institution employees. Not to mention the student groups, mothers' study groups, and representatives of communities residing outside Vienna.

The establishment of the Consultative Council was not just a procedural change. It represented a commitment to democratic decision-making and a more inclusive leadership structure. This shift marked a departure from traditional hierarchical models, fostering transparency and community involvement in decision-making processes.

Leadership Transition: Dr. Wisnu Arfian

In a recent development, Dr. Wisnu Arfian has been elected as the Chairman of Wapena for the term 2024-2026. This transition of leadership marks both continuity and change for the organization.

The outgoing Chairman, Arya Gunawan Usis, handed over the mantle in a symbolic act of accountability, emphasizing the values of trust and responsibility within the community.

Dr. Wisnu Arfian, a post-doctoral researcher at Boku University, brings with him a wealth of experience and a commitment to furthering the goals of Wapena. His election is not only a testament to his individual capabilities but also a reflection of the community's trust in his vision.

"Please support us in realizing our noble intention together, which is to enrich the mosque, strengthen the bonds of brotherhood, and further cultivate the community's understanding of Islam, which embodies the fundamental value of rahmatan lil alamin or mercy for all creation," Wisnu said at As-Salam Wapena Mosque, Rauscherstrasse 7, Wina, Sunday (28/01/2024).

Continued Growth and Adaptation

Wapena's ability to adapt to changing circumstances while preserving its core values underscores its resilience and relevance. The organization's journey, from its early days at the Indonesian Embassy to owning a dedicated mosque, reflects a commitment to growth, community welfare, and cultural preservation.

In conclusion, Wapena stands as a testament to the enduring legacy of the Indonesian Muslim community in Austria. Its rich history, democratic organizational structure, and multifaceted engagement highlight the organization's integral role in fostering a strong sense of community and cultural identity.

As Wapena or Warga Pengajian Austria continues its journey under the leadership of Dr. Wisnu Arfian, it remains poised to contribute positively to the lives of its members and the broader Austrian society. (*)
