Astrid Ika Brings New Face for Indonesian Agriculture: Black Watermelon

TIMESINDONESIA, JAKARTA – Astrid Ika Paramitha, a lecturer at the Agrotechnology Department, Faculty of Science and Technology, Universitas Islam Raden Rahmat (Unira) Malang succesfully brings up the new type of black watermelon. This remarkable discovery marks the first-ever black melon found in Indonesia.
Astrid, who is also pursuing her doctoral studies in agriculture, spent nearly two years conducting research and experiments before achieving this breakthrough. The black melon was developed through gamma-ray irradiation, which induced genetic mutations in the melon plants.

As a result, several genetic variations emerged, one of which was the rare black-skinned melon.
Although a similar melon, Noir Des Carmes, exists in France, Astrid's black melon is distinct. Unlike the French cantaloupe variety, the Indonesian black melon has a glossy black surface with white speckles and dark green shades. This unique appearance sets it apart as a new genetic variant.
The research process involved multiple stages, including genetic population development, plant selection, testing, and final evaluations. Astrid emphasized that this discovery is the product of dedication and perseverance, proving that her research was successful.
The black melon is expected to benefit Indonesian farmers, as most melon seeds are currently imported at high costs.
Astrid hopes that this discovery will contribute to the development of locally produced melon varieties, reducing dependence on expensive foreign seeds. She also plans to officially register the black melon’s genetic line for Plant Variety Protection (PVT) and secure Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) to prevent unauthorized claims over her research.
“This black watermelon is the result of years of dedication and research. I hope it will benefit Indonesian farmers by providing a unique, locally-developed variety that reduces dependence on expensive imported seeds," she said.
She also emphasized that the goal is to ensure this innovation is protected and can be sustainably developed for future generations. The lady expected that there will will be more people study about it and bring new development forwards.
Beyond her contributions to agricultural science, Astrid is a multitalented individual who balances her academic responsibilities with family life. She actively participates in environmental initiatives, including campus greening projects at Unira Malang, further showcasing her passion for plant science.
Astid Ika Paramitaha's groundbreaking discovery of the black melon is a testament to the power of persistence, innovation, and dedication to scientific advancement. With further research and development, this uniqueblack watermelon variety could revolutionize the Indonesian agricultural sector. (*)
