TIMESINDONESIA, JAKARTA – According to data from the Global E-Waste Monitor 2024, Indonesia generated approximately 1.9 million tons of electronic waste (e-waste) in 2022. Nevertheless, the Indonesian Ministry of Environment and Forestry reported that only 17.4% of this e-waste was properly managed. E-waste is a type of waste that contains hazardous and toxic materials. When not managed properly, e-waste can be dangerous for the environment and human health.

On the other hand, digitalization in education is a key strategy for improving the quality of education in Indonesia. Digitalization leads to high and growing demand for Information and Communication Technology (ICT) devices, such as computers, mobile phones and tablets.  However, this demand has not been sufficiently met, particularly in 3T areas (remote, frontier, and underdeveloped regions) in Indonesia.

As Indonesia's leading digital telecommunications company, PT Telkom Indonesia (Persero) Tbk (Telkom) has introduced Eduvice as a solution to support the government's efforts in addressing e-waste. Eduvice is a movement initiated by Telkom with the participation of all employees to donate unused electronic devices as an effort to reduce the amount of electronic waste in Indonesia.

Eduvice implements the principle of reduce, recycle and reuse to properly manage the e-waste. Unused electronic devices are sorted and repaired. The refurbished devices are then distributed as educational tools for students in need. For devices that cannot be repaired, Eduvice collaborates with accredited e-waste management organizations to ensure proper disposal.

Since its launch in 2022, Eduvice has established six dropbox locations in Jakarta, Bandung, Makassar, Surabaya, Medan, and Balikpapan. To date, Eduvice has collected 668 electronic devices, with 259 successfully repaired and distributed to schools and training centers, while 409 non-repairable devices have been processed by certified hazardous waste management partners.

One of the beneficiaries, Salsa (11 years old), a student at SD Citereup, Bandung Regency, stated:

"I am very grateful to Telkom Indonesia for providing electronic learning devices for my friends and me at SD Citereup, Bandung Regency. The tablet I received has been incredibly helpful, making learning easier, especially in using technology. Now, studying is more exciting and enjoyable. I hope the Eduvice program continues so that more children can benefit from it."

On another occasion, Hery Susanto, Senior General Manager of Social Responsibility at Telkom Indonesia, also stated:

"Today, technology especially electronic devices, has become an integral part of our lives. From smartphones and laptops to tablets and more, we rely on them for our daily activities. However, this also contributes to the growing e-waste problem in Indonesia. Through Eduvice, Telkom aims to effectively tackle and manage e-waste, in line with our commitment to Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) No. 12: Responsible Consumption and Waste Management."

Through Eduvice, Telkom encourages the Indonesian public to properly manage and reduce e-waste to mitigate its negative impact on the environment and human health. For more information about Eduvice, please visit www.eduvice.id.
