TIMESINDONESIA, YOGYAKARTA – Dr. Ir. Dian Astriani, S.P., M.P., a lecturer in Agrotechnology at Universitas Mercu Buana Yogyakarta (UMBY), recently presented her latest research at the 3rd International Agri-Ecotourism Congress 2025. The event took place at the Marzon Hotel Executive Hall in Kalibo, Aklan, Philippines (9/6/2025).

Hosted by Aklan State University, the congress brought together experts, practitioners, and enthusiasts from around the world to discuss sustainable practices in agri-ecotourism. This year’s theme, Empowering Sustainable Agri-Ecotourism through Innovation, Collaboration, and Cultural Preservation, set the stage for forward-thinking ideas aimed at balancing agriculture, tourism, and environmental sustainability.

Dr. Dian was invited as a speaker to present her research titled Innovation of Environmentally Friendly Agrotechnology Supporting Sustainable Agriculture in Synergy with Agrotourism in Yogyakarta, IndonesiaHer study highlights a breakthrough in eco-friendly farming methods being implemented in the agrotourism area of Karang Tengah, Imogiri, Bantul, Yogyakarta.

One of the key innovations she presented was the use of waste from cashew nut shells, which are abundant in the region, to produce natural biopesticides. These biopesticides help manage agricultural pests without causing environmental harm, offering a sustainable alternative to chemical-based pest control.

“Karang Tengah has great potential in cashew farming, but the waste has not been utilized effectively,” Dian explained. “Through this innovation, cashew shell waste is transformed into eco-friendly biopesticides that not only support sustainable agriculture but also boost the local economy," she added.

In addition to cashew cultivation, the area also supports the growth of wild silkworms. Dian emphasized the opportunity to develop educational agrotourism centered around wild silkworm farming, which aligns with local traditions and sustainability goals.

“Integrating wild silkworm cultivation with cashew farming creates a unique attraction for tourists. The silk produced has high economic value and strengthens the concept of sustainable agrotourism,” she uttered. Dr. Dian also serves as the Head of the Agrotechnology Study Program at UMBY’s Faculty of Agroindustry.

The congress featured several international speakers, including Van Cung Nguyen, CEO of Trading Service Education and Tourist Co. Ltd. (Vietnam), and Bridget Giffei, a Peace Corps Response volunteer. The keynote address was delivered by Engr. Remelyn R. Recoter, MNSA, CESO III, Director IV of the Agricultural Training Institute under the Philippine Department of Agriculture.

Dr. Dian’s participation not only showcased UMBY’s commitment to sustainable agricultural development but also highlighted Indonesia’s growing contributions to the global agri-ecotourism conversation. (*)
