THR: The Joy of Eid Allowances for Children During Eid al-Fitr
Discover the meaning of THR, a beloved Eid al-Fitr tradition in Indonesia where children receive holiday allowances that symbolize generosity, joy, and family bonding.
JAKARTA – For Indonesian children, the arrival of Eid al-Fitr brings more than festive meals and family gatherings. One of the most anticipated traditions is receiving THR, short for Tunjangan Hari Raya, a form of holiday allowance given by adults to younger family members.
Usually presented in small envelopes filled with money, THR is distributed during visits to relatives throughout the Eid celebration. Children receive the envelopes from parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, and older cousins as a symbol of generosity and happiness during the festive season.
This exchange often takes place after the tradition of asking for forgiveness, making the moment feel even more meaningful.
The envelopes themselves often add to the excitement. Many feature colorful designs decorated with Islamic motifs, cheerful illustrations, or festive greetings such as “Selamat Idul Fitri".
Children proudly collect the envelopes throughout the day, sometimes comparing their collections with siblings and cousins, turning it into a lighthearted competition.
Although the amounts vary, the meaning behind the tradition goes beyond money. THR represents kindness, sharing, and appreciation among family members during one of the most joyful moments of the year. In many households, it also reflects gratitude after successfully completing the fasting month of Ramadan.
For many parents, the tradition also becomes an opportunity to teach children valuable lessons about managing money. Some families encourage their children to divide their THR into several portions for saving, spending, and donating. This practice helps instill responsibility and empathy from a young age.
Fajar Pratama, a university student in Malang, recalled how THR shaped his childhood memories of Eid celebrations. “When I was a child, I would count my envelopes every time we returned home from visiting relatives,” he said (18/3/2026).
“But my parents always reminded me to save some of it and share with others who needed help," he added.
The excitement surrounding THR often begins even before Eid arrives. Many children spend the last days of Ramadan imagining what they will buy with their holiday allowance, from toys and books to snacks and new clothes. This anticipation adds to the festive atmosphere leading up to Eid.
Adults also enjoy the tradition, as it creates joyful moments between generations. Some families even turn the distribution of THR into playful games, asking children to recite short prayers, perform small acts, or sing religious songs before receiving their envelopes.
In recent years, the tradition has also adapted to modern technology. Digital money transfers and electronic wallets are sometimes used when relatives live far away. Despite these changes, the spirit of the tradition remains the same.
For Indonesian families, THR is not merely a gift of money. It is a gesture of affection that strengthens family bonds, preserves cultural values, and creates happy memories for children that last well into adulthood. (*)
