JAKARTA The Ministry of Health of the Republic of Indonesia is strengthening its preparations for the 2026 Hajj pilgrimage by placing greater emphasis on mental health alongside physical readiness. With millions of pilgrims expected to gather in Mecca, psychological resilience is increasingly seen as essential to ensuring a safe and meaningful journey.

Imran Pambudi, Director of Health Services for Vulnerable Groups at the ministry highlighted that the pilgrimage presents not only spiritual fulfillment but also significant mental challenges.

“The Hajj pilgrimage is the peak of spiritual devotion for Muslims, but behind its profound religious meaning, this journey also brings major challenges to mental health. Mental preparation and managing expectations are just as important as physical readiness," he said (22/4/2026).

Rising Concerns Over Stress and Sleep Disorders

According to data from the Ministry of Health, around 10–15 percent of Indonesian pilgrims require special mental health attention. Meanwhile, 30–40 percent are expected to experience sleep disturbances during the pilgrimage.

These issues are largely caused by disrupted circadian rhythms, intense worship schedules, and the need to adapt quickly to a new environment. Elderly pilgrims—around 11,000 individuals—are particularly vulnerable due to both physical and psychological limitations.

Health findings also show that up to 80 percent of elderly patients treated for mental disorders exhibit symptoms of dementia, underscoring the urgency of targeted support.

In addition, extreme temperatures in Mecca, reaching 35–38°C, combined with low humidity, increase the risk of dehydration and fatigue, which can further worsen psychological stress.

Digital Pressure and Regulatory Challenges

Beyond environmental factors, new regulations in Saudi Arabia are adding another layer of pressure. Stricter visa policies and the mandatory use of digital platforms such as Nusuk may pose difficulties, particularly for elderly pilgrims unfamiliar with technology.

The physically demanding nature of rituals like tawaf and sa’i, combined with cultural differences and logistical limitations, can also lead to emotional exhaustion, frustration, and even social isolation.

Holistic Approach as a Key Solution

To address these challenges, the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Indonesia is implementing a holistic approach starting before departure. This includes pre-Hajj counseling, stress management training, and guidance on balancing worship with adequate rest.

Imran Pambudi also emphasized the importance of relaxation practices such as prayer and dhikr, as well as strong social support among pilgrims to reduce anxiety.

“Persiapan mental dan penataan ekspektasi menjadi sama pentingnya dengan persiapan fisik,” he added, stressing that mental readiness is key to maintaining calmness during the pilgrimage.

Specialized health teams will also be deployed to provide rapid psychological assistance, ensuring that early signs of stress do not develop into more serious mental health conditions.

Toward a More Meaningful Pilgrimage Experience

With Indonesia set to send more than 221,000 pilgrims as part of over 1.8 million global participants, the government hopes this comprehensive strategy will enhance both safety and spiritual fulfillment.

By prioritizing mental resilience, the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Indonesia aims to help pilgrims navigate the challenges of Hajj with calmness, adaptability, and devotion—ensuring a more meaningful experience in the Holy Land. (*)
