A Spring with Historical and Cultural Significance
Before becoming a tourist attraction, the spring served as the primary water source for local residents, who used it for bathing and washing thanks to its continuous flow of fresh water.
The name Tirtomoyo is believed to originate from the words tirto (water) and moyo (livelihood), reflecting the spring's long-standing role as a source of life for the surrounding community. Meanwhile, the name Gentong, which means "jar" in Indonesian, refers to the rounded rock formation where the spring emerges, resembling a traditional clay jar.
Recognizing its tourism potential, the local community began developing the site in late 2021. Gentong Natural Spring officially opened as a tourist destination on February 2, 2022, creating new economic opportunities for nearby residents while preserving the area's natural beauty.
Paddle Boats Offer a Unique Experience
One of Gentong Natural Spring's standout attractions is its paddle boats, a facility that is uncommon at natural spring destinations in Malang.
Separate from the swimming area, the paddle boats allow visitors to leisurely explore the calm water while enjoying views of the surrounding greenery. Rental fees range from Rp10,000 to Rp12,000, making the activity affordable for families and groups.
The colorful boats are especially popular with children, although those under 12 years old should always be accompanied by an adult.
Crystal-Clear Water Perfect for Swimming
Swimming remains the main attraction at Gentong Natural Spring. The spring's exceptionally clear water allows visitors to see the rocky bottom and underwater vegetation, particularly when sunlight shines through the surface.
The calm atmosphere, cool water, and fresh mountain air create an ideal setting for relaxation. Early morning is considered the best time to visit, offering cooler temperatures, fewer crowds, and beautiful natural lighting.
Affordable Entrance Fee and Visitor Facilities
Gentong Natural Spring is open daily from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission costs only Rp5,000 per person, making it one of the most affordable nature attractions around Malang.
Despite its budget-friendly ticket price, the destination offers a variety of facilities to ensure a comfortable visit. Visitors can rent paddle boats to explore the spring, while those who are less confident in the water can use inflatable tubes available for hire. The site is also equipped with toilets, a prayer room (mushola), several photo spots, and a culinary area serving food and beverages throughout the day.
For visitors looking to extend their stay, Gentong Natural Spring also provides a camping area that can be reserved in advance. A separate fishing pond is available for those who prefer a more relaxing outdoor activity.
After swimming or riding the paddle boats, visitors can enjoy a variety of food and drinks available at the on-site culinary area.
The food stalls serve local specialties, light snacks, instant meals, hot beverages such as coffee, tea, and ginger drinks, as well as refreshing iced drinks, providing plenty of options for families spending the day outdoors.
