Getting a Closer Look to Bir Ali, a Significant City for One of Hajj Routine

TIMESINDONESIA, MADINAH – Bir Ali is a significant location in Saudi Arabia for pilgrims embarking on the Hajj or Umrah journey from Madinah to Makkah. It serves as a miqat, which is a designated boundary point where pilgrims enter into a state of consecration known as ihram.

This place  is located approximately 9 kilometers southeast of Madinah, making it the closest miqat point for pilgrims coming from Madinah. Those who have finished doing their hajj routine in Medina will be transfered to this place.

Bir Ali holds great significance as it marks the boundary beyond which pilgrims must enter the state of ihram, a sacred state of purity and consecration. It is the starting point for performing the Umrah or Hajj rituals.

Bir Ali and Miqat Rituals

Upon reaching the place, pilgrims disembark from their buses and prepare for the miqat rituals. These rituals include purifying oneself through bathing (ghusl) and wearing the special attire of ihram, consisting of two unsewn white sheets for men and modest clothing for women.

After finishing the ihram, pilgrims offer a two-unit prayer known as the sunnah prayer. They then make their intention (niyyah) for Umrah or Hajj and recite the talbiyah, a supplication proclaiming their readiness for the pilgrimage.

The city is also equipped with facilities to accommodate the needs of pilgrims. These may include rest areas, ablution facilities, prayer spaces, and medical assistance.

To ensure proper segregation, there are separate entrances at Bir Ali for male and female pilgrims. Typically, gates 2 to 5 are designated for male pilgrims, while gates 6 to 7 are for female pilgrims.

Bir Ali has designated stations where officials and volunteers provide guidance, support, and assistance to pilgrims. They help ensure a smooth transition and adherence to the required rituals.

Bir Ali serves as a significant milestone in the pilgrimage journey, where pilgrims enter into a sacred state of devotion and begin their spiritual rites. It plays a vital role in facilitating a well-organized and meaningful pilgrimage experience for the pilgrims traveling from Madinah to Makkah. (*)
