TIMESINDONESIA, JAKARTA – The sun tortoise (Heosemys spinosa), or kknown as kura-kura matahari in the local language rare species found only in Indonesia, is gaining attention in the global conservation community. Its endangered status calls for serious efforts to ensure this captivating species does not disappear from the planet.

Known for its unique shell and remarkable adaptability to its tropical forest habitat, this tortoise has become an iconic symbol of Indonesia's biodiversity.

Endemic Species with Distinctive Features

The sun tortoise, also known as the "spiny turtle" due to its spiked shell, is a species found exclusively in Indonesia, particularly on the islands of Kalimantan and Sumatra.

Its shell serves not only as a physical shield but also adds a striking visual appeal, with small spikes extending outward, making this species stand out.

Dr. Budi Hartono, a reptile expert from the Indonesian Institute of Sciences (LIPI) explained that the sun tortoise is a perfect example of natural adaptation.

"With its sturdy shell and form that blends seamlessly with its environment. They are very difficult to find in the wild, especially in areas impacted by deforestation," he said.

Threats to the Sun Tortoise's Survival

The sun tortoise's survival is currently threatened by human activities, particularly deforestation and illegal hunting. Conserving the sun tortoise has become a major challenge for conservationists in Indonesia.

The tropical forests, which serve as their natural habitat, are rapidly diminishing, while the demand for exotic pets further stresses their population.

"While there have been efforts to preserve their habitat, such as the creation of national parks and conservation areas, hunting for the exotic pet trade remains a significant threat," said Dr. Hartono.

The Importance of Conservation for the Sun Tortoise

Experts emphasize the need for a holistic approach to conserving the sun tortoise. One key aspect is improving protection systems in the forests where they reside.

Additionally, raising public awareness about the importance of protecting Indonesia's endemic fauna is crucial. Conservation campaigns must involve active community participation in preserving the surrounding environment.

"To ensure this species does not go extinct, we must work together not only with the government but also with local communities to educate them about the importance of maintaining ecosystem balance," said Dr. Hartono.

Sun Tortoise: A Beauty That Must Be Preserved

The beauty of the sun tortoise cannot be overlooked. With its unique shell pattern and its role in Indonesia's biodiversity, the sun tortoise should serve as a symbol of our commitment to preserving nature.

Its increasingly rare existence is a reminder of the importance of environmental conservation in Indonesia. Hopefully, with more serious conservation efforts, the sun tortoise will continue to thrive in its natural habitat, becoming part of the natural heritage passed on to future generations. (*)
