Later in November 2018, Straits Times named him as one of the Asians of the Year, along with a group of other disaster management and relief figures collectively called "The First Responders".
The president Joko Widodo even invited him to meet him personally to the Bogor Presidential Palace on October 5th 2018. "Its a remarkable thing to be able to meet him personally. It's kind of my own birthday present for me," Sutopo who was born on October 7th 1969 said.
