TIMESINDONESIA, BANJARNEGARA – The Silvery Gibbon (Hylobates moloch) is a primate in the gibbon family Hylobatidae. It is endemic to the Indonesian island of Java. And this exotic animal is now conserved in Serulingmas Zoo, Banjarnegara, Central Java. The local community tend to call this lovely creature as Owa.

This silvery gibbon is listed as endangered animal on the IUCN Red List since 2008. There are only 1000-2000 Gibbon left in this world.

Its coat is bluish-grey in colour, with a dark grey or black cap. Like all gibbons, the silvery gibbon lacks an external tail, has dorsally placed scapulae, and reduced flexibility in its lumbar region. It has long, curved fingers and very long forelimbs relative to its hind limbs.

It weights around 8 kg or around 16 lbs for a mature one. It also has a strong hand to help them to hang from one branch to another. This animal looks like a huge monkey, and walk like them.

Little did everyone know, Silvery Gibbon is one very faithful and devoted animal. They only married once and will live together till death do them apart. Even, after one of them died, they will never be remarried again and will choose to live apart of their group.

This is also the reason why silvery gibbon keep decreasing from time to time. Being faithful is such a wonderful thing, but at this stage it makes them harder to be conserved.

“Our Owa (Silvery Gibbon) loves to be the center of attention. They will put their happiest face when the people come close to them just to say hello or hug them, I think they feel very lonely during this enclosure,” the Director of Serulingmas Zoo, Banjarnegara, Central Java Lulut Yekti Adi said.
