Masjid Jami' Sumenep, an Exotic Mosque with Historical Value

TIMESINDONESIA, SUMENEP – Sumenep, Madura, East Java has an iconic tourist destination called as Masjid Jami’. Masjid Jami’ is a local mosque which has been built since 1779. This mosque has become an eye witness towards the development of the city since then.
This mosque has such an exotic design. It has a mix between Chinese and Middle East architecture. Lots of Chinese ornament and Arabian calligraphy patched on every corner of the mosque.

This mosque took around 9 years in building. The building project was finished in 1787. “The design shows how the local community has been familiar to welcome new culture since then,” Ibnu Hajar, a local cultural practitioner said on Tuesday (15/9/2020).
Still according to him, the color of the mosque has never been change since it was firstly built. Yellow and gold has dominated the mosque colors which indicate the sun or light and glory i.e the main though of Ma’rifat/hakikat in Islam.
Green is also used to color the mosque for it implies the peace that has become the core in Islamic thought. Ibnu said that all these color shows how the local community would like to make Masjid Jami’ Sumenep not merely just a mosque to strengthen their bond with Allah, but also a place to give them some peace and hope.
