Nadiem Anwar Makarim, Man of the Year of TIMES Indonesia Award 2020

TIMESINDONESIA, JAKARTA – TIMES Indonesia Award 2020 granted Nadiem Anwar Makarim as Man of the Year. This genius guy which was born on 4 July 1984 is the current minister of education and culture of the Republic of Indonesia.
After graduating from Harvard University with an MBA this guy joined McKinsey & Company in Jakarta in 2006-2009 as management consultant. He then became Co-Founder and Managing Director of Zalora in 2011-2012.

By that time he also developed a startup company known as GoJek. An online hailing transportation like Uber. At that time, he only has 15 employees with 450 drivers around Jakarta.
While developing his app, Nadiem who is the third child of the couple Nono Anwar Makarim and Atika Algadri decided to walk out of Zalora and worked as a chief innovation officer of Kartuku.
In the early days, Kartuku didn't have any competition in cashless payment solutions in Indonesia. Later, Kartuku was then acquired by Gojek to strengthen GoPay.
His hard work made GoJek become a startup company which today has become a decacorn company with valuation over US$10 billion.
His career has made the current President of Indonesia Joko Widodo took him as one of his secretary. In October 23 2019 the President appointed him as the Minister of Education and Culture.
Nadiem officially no longer served as CEO of Gojek and chose to focus fully on contributing as Minister of Education and Culture. However, Nadiem Makarim still has a share portion of around 4.81 percent.
Talking about his achievements so far as Minister of Education and Culture, Nadiem abolish the National Examination (UN) in Indonesian education system.
He put forward the concept of "Independent Learning" and relied on competency tests that were no longer represented by the conservative concept of memorizing.
He also dismissed all the National Examination and put the students’ safety as national priority during this pandemic.
“The students’ safety is our number one priority, that’s why 2020 National Examination is dismissed,” Nadiem said on teleconference (24/3/2020).
Beside the National Examination, the "Free Learning" program also includes the National Standard School Examination (USBN), Learning Implementation Plan (RPP), and Zoning New Student Admissions Regulations (PPDB).
During this pandemic, he addressed the students to stay and study from home. He ordered some BOS funding to be used to help the students and the teachers pay their internet data.
For all his hard work and dedication during his career makes TIMES Indonesia Award 2020 choose him as the right person for Man of the Year. With all being said, Nadiem Anwar Makarim is so worth the award. Congratulation!!!.
