TIMESINDONESIA, BANYUWANGI – Behind its captivating beauty, Pulau Merah Beach in Geopark Ijen holds a profound geological history that enriches the tourist experience in this breathtaking destination. This will aww the tourists reaching this place.

General Manager of Geopark Ijen, Abdillah Baraas, unveils the secrets of this geological marvel, tracing its origins back to a collision between the Indo-Australian and Eurasian tectonic plates approximately 66 million years ago.

Abdillah explains that the southern region of Banyuwangi was once believed to be a vast ocean. The collision of tectonic plates gave rise to the gradual emergence of land and mountain ranges along the southern coast around that time.

After the Collision

Meanwhile, the northern part of northern Banyuwangi remained a large lake until about four million years ago. The continuous growth and development of mountains in southern Java, Abdillah notes, led to Pulau Merah Beach becoming the first landmass in the Geopark Ijen region.

The subsequent volcanic activities in the region, particularly in Pesanggaran District, Banyuwangi, created an ideal environment for life to thrive. The volcanic eruptions bestowed blessings upon the surrounding areas, fostering lush flora and providing a habitat for fauna amid a rich ecosystem.

Unfortunately, Abdillah highlights that the volcanic activities in the southern mountains gradually ceased around four million years ago, coinciding with the onset of limestone formation in the region. The decline in magma supply from the magma chamber led to the cessation of volcanic activities in the south. Consequently, the focus of mountain formation shifted to the northern region of Geopark Ijen.

The Iconic Pulau Merah

Today, the remaining geological feature of the southern mountains is Pulau Merah, now known as an iconic landmark of Pulau Merah Beach. Visitors to this red-hued island in the midst of the sea can witness the oldest rocks in the Geopark Ijen region, providing a glimpse into the dynamic history of the Earth.

Abdillah emphasizes that geology not only speaks of the past but also tells the story of the present and predicts the future. The geological site of Pulau Merah stands as a testament to the dynamic nature of the Earth, showcasing the intricate interplay of geological events that have shaped the landscape over millions of years.

As visitors explore Pulau Merah Beach in Geopark Ijen, they embark on a journey through time, witnessing the remnants of ancient geological events that have shaped this stunning coastal destination. The vibrant hues of Pulau Merah not only capture the eyes but also tell the tale of the Earth's dynamic and ever-evolving history. (*)
