TIMESINDONESIA, JAKARTA – In a virtual seminar held in Jakarta on February 23, 2024, Dr. Jimmy Panji Wirawan, an obstetrics and gynecology specialist at RSUD Tanjung Priok, Jakarta, shed light on the adverse effects of infrequent bathing on women's reproductive organs. He emphasized that cleanliness is key to preventing the risk of abnormal vaginal discharge in women.

Dr. Jimmy highlighted the concern that many patients, particularly teenagers, tend to be lax about bathing, sometimes only doing so every two or three days. While this might seem trivial, it can increase the risk of vaginal discharge as bacteria and germs can proliferate in unclean areas.

"Many patients, especially teenagers who have entered puberty, sometimes are lazy to bathe, maybe two or three days apart. It's a small thing, but it can increase the risk of vaginal discharge because the key is cleanliness," he stated.

Vaginal Discharge

Vaginal discharge is a common condition experienced by women, especially before menstruation, after menstruation, and during the fertile period. However, Dr. Jimmy emphasized that normal discharge should not have a smell, color, or consistency different from the usual.

Discharge that has an odor or color, he mentioned, often indicates a health problem. To maintain the health of women's reproductive organs, Dr. Jimmy recommends that women bathe regularly and clean their genital area at least once a day with clean water, avoiding the use of soap.

Avoid the Pantyliners

The daily use of pantyliners should be avoided as it can increase the risk of vaginal discharge. Similarly, the use of alcohol-based wipes, scented sanitary pads, and tight underwear should be minimized.

Additionally, he suggests opting for looser and more comfortable underwear, especially those made of cotton. Women are also advised to change clothes if they sweat, as a humid environment can increase the risk of vaginal discharge.

Getting Worse during Pregnancy

Dr. Jimmy also reminded that women are more susceptible to vaginal discharge during pregnancy. However, if the discharge has an odor or color, he recommends immediate consultation with a doctor. "Regular check-ups by a healthcare professional are crucial to ensuring the health of women's reproductive organs," he ended.

In conclusion, Dr. Jimmy emphasized that maintaining the cleanliness of women's reproductive organs is crucial for women's health. By taking simple steps such as regular bathing, wearing comfortable clothing, and avoiding the use of harmful products, women can safeguard the health of their reproductive organs and prevent the risk of serious health issues.
