Dr. Hj. 1. Proper Physical Preparation

Undergo a comprehensive health check-up and consult with your doctor about your health status," she advises. Regular light physical exercise is also recommended to boost stamina.

2. Wear Appropriate Clothing
Comfortable clothing that suits the Makkah climate is essential. She suggests wearing loose-fitting, light-colored clothing. "Loose clothing helps air circulation and prevents overheating. Don’t forget to use head protection like hats or umbrellas to avoid direct sun exposure," adds the secretary of LK PCNU Kota Malang.
3. Stay Hydrated
Dehydration is one of the biggest risks in Makkah’s high temperatures. She advises pilgrims to pay close attention to their fluid intake. "Drink water regularly, even before you feel thirsty. Avoid caffeinated and sugary drinks that can cause dehydration," she explains. Carrying your own water bottle is also recommended to monitor daily water consumption.
4. Recognize Heatstroke Symptoms
Heatstroke is a dangerous condition that can occur when the body temperature rises drastically. Dr. Syifa urges pilgrims to recognize its symptoms, such as dizziness, nausea, dry and hot skin, and rapid heartbeat. "If you experience these symptoms, seek shade immediately and cool down with water or a damp towel placed on your head," she advises.
5. Maintain Personal Hygiene
Even though the primary focus is on performing the pilgrimage, personal hygiene must not be neglected. She advises always washing hands before eating and after using the toilet. "Maintaining personal hygiene helps prevent various diseases that can arise in crowded and dusty environments," she explains. Wearing a mask in mosques and crowded places and carrying hand sanitizer is also recommended.
6. Get Enough Rest
Dr. Syifa reminds pilgrims of the importance of adequate rest during the Hajj. "Don’t push yourself to keep going without breaks. Allow your body time to rest and recover from fatigue," says the lecturer from FK UB. Sufficient sleep also helps maintain optimal immune function.
7. Use Protective Gear
High temperatures can also cause skin burns. Use head coverings, sunglasses, and umbrellas when outdoors. The lady also suggests using sunscreen with SPF over 50 on exposed skin. "Don’t forget to reapply it every few hours, especially after sweating or getting wet," she adds.
8. Eat Healthy Food
A healthy diet should not be overlooked. Dr. Syifa recommends consuming nutritious and balanced meals. "Ensure that the food you eat is rich in protein, vitamins, and minerals to maintain your energy throughout the day," she notes. Avoid heavy, hard-to-digest foods to prevent adding stress to your body.
9. Stay Calm and Pray
In addition to physical health, the lady emphasizes the importance of mental well-being. "Stay calm and avoid excessive stress. Pray frequently and surrender to Allah SWT for health and strength during the Hajj," she concludes.
By following these tips from Dr. Hj. Syifa Mustika, SpPD-KGEH, it is hoped that pilgrims can perform their Hajj 2024 more smoothly and comfortably, despite the high temperatures in Makkah. Always remember to take care of your health and prepare well before departing for the Holy Land. (*)
