Hajj 2024: Understanding the Restrictions of Ihram

TIMESINDONESIA, JAKARTA – Ihram, a sacred state for Muslims undertaking the Hajj or Umrah, involves specific guidelines and restrictions that must be strictly adhered to. This rules applies for every hajj, including Hajj 2024.
The Ministry of Religious Affairs has outlined these prohibitions to ensure the sanctity and proper conduct of the pilgrimage. Here are the main things pilgrims cannot do while in the state of ihram:

1. Wearing Stitched Clothing (For Men)
Men are prohibited from wearing stitched clothing that fits the shape of the body. Instead, they must wear two unstitched white cloths, known as the ihram garments.
2. Covering the Face and Hands (For Women)
Women in ihram cannot cover their faces with a niqab or their hands with gloves. They must keep their faces and hands uncovered.
3. Grooming Activities
Pilgrims are not allowed to cut their nails, shave or cut their hair, or remove any body hair. These grooming activities are strictly forbidden during ihram.
4. Physical Intimacy
Engaging in intimate acts, including kissing, touching with desire, or sexual intercourse, is prohibited. These actions are considered violations of the sacred state of ihram.
5. Using Perfumes
Applying perfumes, colognes, or any scented products is not allowed once a person has entered into ihram. This includes scented soaps and lotions.
6. Covering the Head (For Men)
Men must not cover their heads with hats, caps, turbans, or any other headgear. Keeping the head uncovered is a mandatory requirement during ihram.
7. Wearing Footwear Covering Ankles
Men are not allowed to wear socks or shoes that cover the ankles and heels. They must wear sandals or footwear that leaves the ankles exposed.
8. Hunting or Killing Animals
Pilgrims cannot hunt, kill, or harm animals in any way, except for those that pose a direct threat to their safety.
9. Engaging in Conflicts
Fighting, arguing, or using foul language is strictly prohibited. Pilgrims are expected to maintain a peaceful and respectful demeanor.
10. Marriage and Proposals
Getting married, conducting marriage ceremonies, or proposing for marriage is not allowed during ihram.
11. Covering Eyes (For Women)
Women are prohibited from covering their eyes with a veil. The face, including the eyes, must remain uncovered.
12. Engaging in Vanity
Acts of vanity, such as looking in mirrors for grooming purposes or applying makeup, are not permitted.
13. Using Perfumed Oils
Applying perfumed oils or any other fragrant substances is forbidden. Only non-scented products should be used.
14. Cutting Trees or Plants
Damaging or cutting down trees and plants within the sanctuary boundaries of Makkah is prohibited.
By understanding and adhering to these restrictions, pilgrims of Hajj 2024 can ensure that they maintain the sanctity of their ihram and perform their religious obligations correctly.
