TIMESINDONESIA, JAKARTA – The Shell Eco-Marathon Asia Pacific and the Middle East (SEM APME) 2025 has once again proven to be a stage for groundbreaking innovation in energy-efficient mobility. Among the many teams competing, Semeru Team from Universitas Negeri Malang (UM) stood out with their remarkable performance.

Their latest prototype, Kumbolo EVO-3, not only secured first place in the Prototype Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) category, but also set a new benchmark in fuel efficiency with 1,083 km/l.

Engineering Excellence Behind Kumbolo EVO-3

What sets Kumbolo EVO-3 apart is the meticulous engineering behind it. Designed with low-friction bearings, a lightweight carbon fiber body, and low rolling resistance tires, this vehicle was built for maximum efficiency.

By optimizing weight distribution and aerodynamics, the team successfully reduced the car’s weight from 47 kg to 43 kg, significantly enhancing its fuel performance.

According to Tegar Adityah, the team’s driver, the vehicle's advanced design helped him navigate the Lusail International Circuit efficiently. However, he also faced challenges such as wide tracks, sloping turns, and minimal track markers.

Despite these hurdles, precise engineering and rigorous testing allowed Kumbolo EVO-3 to perform flawlessly.

Beyond its technological advancements, Kumbolo EVO-3 represents a shift toward greener mobility solutions. The team’s decision to use ethanol fuel reflects their commitment to reducing carbon emissions and promoting sustainable energy alternatives.
