TIMESINDONESIA, JAKARTA – PT Bank Negara Indonesia Tbk (BNI) has pledged support for the Village and Subdistrict Cooperatives (Koperasi Desa/Kelurahan Merah Putih) program, officially launched by President Prabowo Subianto on Monday, July 21, 2025, in Bentangan Village, Klaten, Central Java. The initiative is part of the government’s strategy to boost community-based economic sovereignty.

As a member of the state-owned banking association Himbara, BNI is managing 22 out of the 103 pilot cooperatives, including the cooperative in Bentangan. The bank is providing digital financial services, cooperative institution strengthening, and financing facilities.

“Cooperatives transform weakness into strength. This is the path to true independence: the ability to ensure a decent life for all Indonesians,” Prabowo said during his remarks at the launch event.

Attendees included cabinet ministers, members of the House of Representatives and Regional Representative Council, and local government officials. BNI President Director Putrama Wahju Setyawan and senior executives were also present.

The program aims to establish 80,000 cooperatives nationwide, focusing on forming new cooperatives, revitalizing inactive ones, and expanding operational entities. These cooperatives will manage services including food distribution outlets, logistics, warehousing, cold storage, village pharmacies and clinics, and savings and loan units.

BNI Corporate Secretary Okki Rushartomo said the bank is ready to support village cooperatives through digital platforms like BNIdirect, wondr by BNI, and its Agent46 network that reaches remote areas.

“BNI is committed to supporting village cooperatives as independent and inclusive local economic pillars. We provide not only financing, but also digital solutions and institutional development,” Okki said.

The program aligns with the vision of BNI’s founder, R.M. Margono Djojohadikusumo, who emphasized rural-based economic empowerment as key to equitable national growth.

“With BNI’s active participation, this program is expected to accelerate inclusive rural development and long-term self-sufficiency,” Okki added. (*)
