Ujungan, Another Traditional Martial Art of Indonesia

TIMESINDONESIA, JAKARTA – You might have known about Pencak Silat, a traditional martial art of Indonesia. It has a beautiful move yet strong and sturdy. And if you have fallen in love to it, you need to see Ujungan, a traditional martial art of Majalengka.

Legend has it that this martial art has been uses since 1400. "It has been used for hundred years. This was actually used only for those royal guard and sometimes used during a sport competition between them," the Chief of Bunilaya Kuda Putih Martial Training Class, Taufik Hidayat said.

However, as time goes by there were smaller and smaller amount of people put their interest in Ujungan. And as for now, you could only found this martial art at Cengal, Maja, Majalengko, West Java.

Unlike Pencak Silat which using nothing beside empty hand during the practice, Ujungan will need 70 cm long rattan stick for practice. Normally you will need to use a customize helmet. An umpire will also accompany you during the practice.

"It doesn’t have any rule. You don’t need certain technique just throw and hit your opponent with the stick. You could hit any part of your opponent's body from top to bottom," Taufik Hidayat added.

Ujungan martial art of Majalengka once was banned in 1960 for considered to perform some violent. As for now  Bunilaya Kuda Putih Martial Training Class brought it back in 2009 with certain customization to defect the violence side. (*)
